Basic Mountaineering

Do you dream of travel above tree line in winter? The Boston Rock Gym's one-day basic mountaineering course, taught by AMGA certified rock guide Joe Lentini, will cover the skills you need to move efficiently with speed and safety over varied terrain under changing conditions.

Helmets, crampons, and gear are provided. You will need to rent winter mountaineering boots (available at REI).

Skills learned:

  • Crampon use
  • Self arrest
  • Navigation
  • Avalanche safety

Clothing required:

Proper clothing/equipment is essential when going out into the mountains in winter. Participants should be prepared with the following items:

  • Skin LayersAny one of the following. Items should be synthetic wicking polyester.

    •        Lightweight synthetic long underwear top, long sleeve
    •        Midweight synthetic long underwear top, long sleeve
    •        Heavyweight synthetic long underwear top, long sleeve
  • Mid LayersAny one of the following. Items should be synthetic wicking polyester. 

    •        Midweight synthetic long underwear top, long sleeve
    •        Heavyweight synthetic long underwear top, long sleeve
  • Insulation Layers: Both of the following. 

    •        200-300 weight Polar Fleece or similar jacket. Pullover or zip up.
    •        Down or Prima-loft sweater or vest.
  • Bottom Layers:  Both of the following. Items should be synthetic wicking polyester. 

    •        Lightweight or midweight synthetic long underwear bottom
    •        Heavyweight synthetic bottom, pants or bibs
  • Outer Layer:  Both of the following.

    •        Gore-tex or other waterproof/breathable wind shell with secure hood. Pullover or zip up.
    •        Gore-tex or other waterproof/breathable wind pants or bibs, full side zips are best
  • Hands: Both of the following.

    •        Heavy gloves, a Gore-tex winter glove system
    •        Heavy mittens, insulated or Gore-tex shell and liners
  • Face, eyes and ears, feet, and other: All of the following.

    •        Synthetic or wool hat or balaclava
    •        Ski goggles
    •        Facemask
    •        Headlamp or small flashlight
    •        One pair heavy wool or synthetic socks
    •        High boot gaiters (covers boot top to knee)
    •         1 or 2 large mouth water bottles
    •        Food for the day
    •        2500-4000 cubic inch pack with straps for crampons

This program is designed for: Beginners new to mountaineering
Location: Course is located in North Conway, NH
Minimum age: Must be at least 16 years old unless a private class is booked
Max ratio: 4 Participants : 1 Instructor
Gear needed: Helmets, crampons, and ice axes are provided. Winter mountaineering boots can be rented at REI.
Experience needed: None

Reservation : Space is limited in these courses. All courses must be pre-paid in full to reserve a space.
Cancellation: We require a minimum of 7 days to cancel or re-schedule. No refunds will be given inside of 7 days prior to the course. BRG and its guides may cancel or re-schedule due to weather. Refunds will be issued in the event of poor weather.
