Getting started

First Time Climbing at BRG

Is this your first visit to a rock climbing gym?

Or your first visit to the Boston Rock Gym?

Either way, we’re glad you found us! We want to make sure that your first visit is nothing but the best! Follow our easy 2-step process below to get started.

Step 1: Prior to or at your arrival, fill in the online waiver.

A waiver is mandatory for everyone that wishes to climb. Participants under the age of 18 must have the waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian. Fill out the online waiver here.

Step 2: Take a belay test.

Belaying is the technique for holding the climber's rope to arrest falls. The belay test requires that you know how to:

  • Properly fit a climbing harness.
  • Tie directly into the harness with a re-traced figure eight knot.
  • Set up and belay properly with an ATC or similar device.

All of these skills must be shown to our staff with little or no assistance. If you have any questions about the test, feel free to give us a call.

If you do not know how to belay and would like to climb, we recommend taking our Intro to Indoor Climbing Course. This class is only available to participants over the age of 12. Or, you can come in anytime and use our five auto-belay devices. We have three walls set up with mechanical devices that allow you to climb without the need for a partner, or knowledge of the proper knots and belaying technique. Additionally, you can use our bouldering area. Bouldering is a form of climbing that is lower to the ground, and does not require the use of harnesses or belaying.

If you are interested in bringing your children in to climb, we suggested that you look into our Kid's Climb program. Otherwise, you can always hire our staff for a Private Belay. Just call the gym at least 24 hours in advance to ensure that we have staffing available.

From our customers...

I have no previous rock climbing experience and am quite scared of heights, but I had an absolutely fantastic, exhilarating time at the Boston Rock Gym. The staff was incredibly helpful, relaxed, and encouraging. I am definitely planning to return. — Alex S.

Excellent Indoor Rock Climbing Experience. I was a new starter. I took my intro lesson here, and also climbed occasionally. The staff has always been tremendously helpful. Great place to start, even a better place to practice !! — Ptite H.

BRG is awesome. My friend Mike P. brought me here the first time and I was hooked. Soon enough, I became belay certified and now I'm bringing other friends in.— Hisham H.
